Statement

Intent

At Our Lady and St. Anne’s, we aim to prepare our learners for today’s challenging world by giving them skills, knowledge and opportunities to develop their understanding in design and technology. Our curriculum is inspiring and practical and focuses on the progression of skills, each year building upon the last. We want our children to be creative and imagination, when designing and creating solutions to solve problems and or meet today’s needs.

We intend for all children to acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum. We aim to link design technology with other subjects including, maths, science, history and geography.

Our children will be taught to use a range of tools and technology responsibly and carefully, being mindful of how their behaviour and actions can affect others. We wish to embed design concepts and skills  across the whole curriculum to make learning creative and accessible. By the end of UKS2, we want our children to be able to have the confidence to choose the best tool and resource to fulfil a task set by teachers.

Implementation

At Our Lady and St. Anne’s, design technology is taught in discrete lessons,  though it is often linked with other subjects e.g designing a catapult in history, or the concept of structures in science.

The curriculum is currently delivered by a nationally recognised scheme of work created by Kapow. The scheme has been closely linked to the 2014 National curriculum - each year group on the previous year and ensures progression and coverage of curriculum. We have planned out coverage of the subject to ensure that the four strands in Design technology are all met and that there is progression as well as a variety of tasks.

Impact

Children will have developed the knowledge, skills and understanding to help them access and use a range of tools and technology in a safe and creative way. Children will have developed skills to understand how to use technology safely and creatively, but also the confidence to design new solutions using the skills they have developed throughout their time at Our Lady and St. Anne’s.
